Welcome to Online Self-Learning Center of English Reading & Vocabulary Testing! This website is a part of the national project on on-line learning. The heads of our project are Prof. Liu (Foreign Language Department in NTHU) and Prof. Chang (Information Engineering Department in NTHU). The team includes professors and students from National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University, and Tunghai University. This affiliated project is mainly constructed and maintained by Prof. Chang (NTHU), Prof. Chen (NTNU), and Prof. Kao (NTU).
According to the experts from government and scholars, English reading ability is considered very important. With the development of the Internet, on-line information in English is increasing, such as on-line journals, or electronic books.
Students thus encounter many difficulties when facing so much information available to them. In a recent ROC TESOL conference, the problems of students' reading ability were brought into question. Common reading problems were indicated as the following:
1. College and high school students complain about their limited vocabulary, which results in reading obstacles.
2. They can't understand complicated sentence structures and can't get the gist of the reading material.
3. They are unfamiliar with reading strategies and can't rapidly filter out useful information.
In this project, we refer to some experts on teaching vocabulary and reading, trying to find out effective methods that facilitate students' reading and vocabulary ability in this intelligent web-based environment. Hopefully this website helps improve Taiwanese student's language learning.
You can read the articles assigned by your teacher here. We provide various assistant learning tools. Please refer to the user guide: In order to track your learning process, we mark the vocabulary in the articles you post in terms of frequency, so you will know the degree of difficulty and the frequency of the words you encounter. Moreover, we can give you quizzes on the articles you post and track your scores.
English teachers can see the articles that students select and grasp the degree of difficulty. You can also check students' test results and thus get hold of their learning condition.
